Yet again you have found a super enlightening book and author. I have If We Burn on my list to read next. Having lived in and through the "Battle in Seattle" (so dubbed by police; the 1999 demonstrations in Seattle against the doings of the WTO) I am curious how we go about getting the media 'on side'. The demonstrators were, on whole, well organized, and there were leaders ... but maybe too many?? There were quite a few downtown workers, not demonstrators, who got caught up by and even assaulted by police and yet the media never seemed to change their tune. Thank you Mr Tumin and Bevins.

Thanks for your kind words and your thoughts, Barbara. Vincent talks about Seattle and the WTO in his book! If I had to take a (less informed) stab at your question, I'd say the answer is to make sure your group has a clear spokesperson and/or a clear messaging strategy that takes into account the perspectives that media like to showcase, for better or worse -- e.g. come up with a kind of underdog story, that's easy to write about and for people to understand, and which does a decent job of getting your points across, even if it's not exactly the ideal framing you'd choose...

I'll be interested to hear your answer after reading Vincent's book!
