Morning, y’all!
I have some exciting news: I’m bringing The Power Broker to the stage!
In January, I announced I’d been working on a new project: a series of videos bringing to life The Power Broker, Robert Caro’s famed biography about city builder Robert Moses. I’m still working on those videos, but in the meantime, I’m also turning the project into a trilogy of live shows. The first one is on Saturday, June 7th, at 4:00 PM at Caveat in New York—save the date!
Why a live show?
At the heart of each video I’m making is, essentially, a PowerPoint presentation. I narrate maps, archival images, diagrams, one too many references to a talking catfish (you’ll see), etc. While rehearsing for different collaborators, one consistent piece of feedback kept coming up: This would make a great live show.
I thought, oh, that’s a frisky idea. I’ve toured live shows mixing comedy and history before, but I hadn’t considered doing one for The Power Broker. Fast forward—I spoke to the team behind Caveat, a nerdy comedy theater in the Lower East Side (21A Clinton Street), and they were excited about the idea, too. And here we are!
How to watch
📍 Live in NYC – Come to Caveat on June 7th at 4:00 PM! Tickets will go on sale next week. I’ll email the link to you! There’ll be limited seats.
💻 Can’t make it? – There’ll also be a livestream, and paying Skippies will get access to the filmed performance.
Hope to see you there! Bring a pal! The show will be the first of three, each breaking down a third of The Power Broker. If you're new here, Caro’s book examines how Robert Moses transformed New York's infrastructure and tilted democracy off course, in ways we’re all still paying for today. You can learn more here:
That’s it for this week. I have several thousand words to memorize. I’m also prepping for an interview next week with the president of the ACLU!
Have a nice weekend,
Ben
Were I in NYC, I'd check it out. Break a leg.
It's in the calendar!
